Stories about early California throughout the tour leave you with an understanding of why small grains dominated food production in this area of the Sacramento Valley known as Yolo County. You’ll experience the world of agriculture yesterday, and today. Learn how California does it bigger and better. Discover how products that we enjoy created the need for innovation.

The Heidrick Ag History Center will introduce visitors to the mechanical genius that has become synonymous with today’s farm fresh movement. Want to set your eyes on some of the most beautiful and rare machines ever created? Take a moment to hear the sounds of steam and early gas engines at interactive kiosks. The Fred Heidrick Collection is set against blacksmith, barn, and farm backdrops that explain what it must have been like to produce food before today’s advancements. This tour will focus on wheat and other small grain production that historians refer to as California’s Gold in the late 1800’s. You’ll see early combines (harvesters) and learn why “horse power” trumped the hand held sickle for getting food to the market.

Discover how Fred Heidrick Sr. began to collect tractors, harvesters, and common transportation that defined California Gold.

From the motorcycles, farmers used to get through fields and dusty roads, to the trolley used to take livestock sellers from the train station to hotels, the Heidrick Ag History Center puts visitors in touch with their agricultural heritage.
